The difference between an external hard drive or burning DVDs and Off-Site Backup
While regularly backing up your files to a spare hard drive or a collection of writeable DVDs can provide protection from hard drive failure or viruses, it doesn't do you any good if your house burns down. Local backups also only work if you are diligent about preforming them on a regular basis.
Off-Site Backups work automatically in the background. You spend five minutes setting up the program and then you never have to worry about it unless you need to recover a file. If your computer is stolen or otherwise left unusable, all you have to do to get your files back is re-download the provided software and log back in. With just a few more clicks your data will start coming back as if it was never lost.

Your uploaded data is safe with Alexandria Backup
Once you setup the software it begins automatically sending encrypted copies of your files to our servers. Once on the server it is then replicated two more times to different servers, just in case something happens to your computer and one of our servers at the same time. The primary servers, as well as my office, are located in Annandale, Virginia. My "offsite-offsite-backup" servers are located in Alexandria, Virginia. Preparations are being made to create another backup location in Harrisonburg, Virginia. That will account for five different copies of your data that would have to simultaneously fail in order to loose your data.
When you need to restore your data it will be here waiting for you.
All you have to do is click the “restore” button and follow the on screen instructions. You can even restore individual files if need to.
If you need to have the data restored absolutely as soon as possible and can not wait for it to download over your internet connection, we can provide you with an external hard drive with your data already copied to it. If you are in the Northern Virginia area we can even drive it out to you with same day service! If you are out of the area we can mail it to you using next-day air. The exact cost of this service is based on many factors, so if you need us to send you a physical copy please call us and we can give you a quote.
Feel free to store everything on your main computer. I do ask that you don't store multiple external hard drives using this service. It's designed to back up computers, not archives.
Questions and Awnsers:
Q:What types of files can I store?
A: School or work docuemnts, pictures from your family vaction, home videos, and even your entire music library. Take a lot of pictures? No problem; store them all. Any type of computer file that you store in your My Documents folder can be easily backed up.
Q: Why are you offering this service?
A: I've had several friends come to me with dead hard drives, asking if I could get their pictures or school assignments back for them. In this case, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so I decided to do something about it. By creating this service I want to try to prevent people from losing their important documents ever again.
Q: How do I sign up for this service?
A: By visiting the signup page and agreeing to its terms.
Q: How can I contact you?
A: By phone or email. Check out the contact page for info.
Q: How do I access my folder on your servers?
A: Via SSH. Please go to the Installation page for a how-to.
Q: How much data can I store using this service?
A: I don't want to set a specific ammount. I've designed this service to back up home/user computers, not archives. If you have an abnormally large amount of data that you need to back up (measured in TB) then you will need to go with business level of service. Contact me if you're interested in higher-level service.
Q: Do you offer a Service Level Agreement?
A: I can't compete with the "big dogs" by offering "five nines" of uptime, but what I can offer is a human voice if you ever have a technical problem with my service. This service is also specifically offered in the Northern Virgina (Alexandria) area, so if you need me to I can drive to your home or business and fix your technical problems (If you need something like a virus removed, check out my computer repair website). I am a college student and I run this service primarily for college students, and I promise to try my best to keep your data safe. If you have specific concerns about uptime or security, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Q: Do you offer Business-Class service?
A: While this service is intended for college students I do offer priority level support to those who need it for their business (or who just want the added flexibility ). It costs more, but includes features such as free 2nd-day-air delivery of a hard drive for emergency restores (if necessary). Visit the business page for more information.
